One of the highlights of the Outback tour is the two days at Ayers Rock and the ultimate highlight is the “Sounds of Silence” dinner. This is an evening extravaganza of dining and entertainment. Starting with drinks and canapés, we watched the sun slowly set over Ayers Rock, now known as Uluru. As the colors continue to change with the setting sun we moved to the outdoor dining area, the tables set with white linen for the four course meal we were about to receive that included unlimited food and drink.
Well after dark and after dinner, we received an astronomy lesson about the Southern Hemisphere sky. The complete lack of man-made light resulted in an absolutely breathtaking view of the Milky Way. A sight that can only be seen in the remotest of places on earth. Included was telescope viewing of the stars. We were even able to see the rings of Saturn!! Without question, a special moment in life not to be forgotten.
The next morning we all drove to a viewing area to watch the sun rise over Uluru (locals name for Ayers Rock), followed by a visit and hike in the sister mountains, Tata Tjutra.
