Our group was picked up by a bus to drive to a Dreamtime Experience. None of us knew what to expect. Our bus turned off the paved road onto a bumpy, dirt lane taking the left fork then the right as we drove deeper into the desert hinterlands. Finally we saw a group of Aboriginal women sitting around on blankets with little fires going to keep them warm. Our bus stopped and a rugged looking Aussie greeted us and welcomed the group to the bush camp. We picked up little camp stools and circled around to hear his stories. He explained how the ancient people had been living off the land for 45,000 years. This middle of Australia has some of the hottest temperatures In the country.
We learned about the seeds, medicine plants, witchety grubs and smoked kangaroo tail. He even had samples for us to try. We had a morning damper and Billy tea. Damper is a bread that is made by grinding some of the seeds they find and baking it over a wood fire. The Billy tea is water boiled over the same fire with loose tea thrown in the pot.
The finale was we were able to purchase original works of Aboriginal art like this one in the photo from the artist…its Audrey with my find. Each piece tells a story of their culture. An exceptional experience here in the Outback.
