We left the campground at 8 AM and stopped halfway to take a 30 minute walk through the rainforest to see a 125’ tall, 13’ diameter tree that was over 1800 years old. We then proceeded on towards Waitomo and stopped in Te Kuiti where we had lunch before going to our campground. Everybody on the tour travels at their own pace — some traveling together and others alone and are free to explore anything that interests them as they travel…a great way to travel! At 1:45 we ride shared to the Ruakuri Caves for a very interesting 2 hour tour of a cave to see limestone formations and view the Glowworms ( larvae that glows in the dark). Blackwater rafting thru the cave is an optional activity for the younger and more adventurous. At dusk, we drove to the same area to do a bushwalk thru the forest and some caves to see the glowworms again. The Glowworms are small threadlike creatures that have a chemical reaction that creates light in the dark – many worms creating many lights that look like stars in the sky.
