Lightning Ridge is on the edge of the Australian Outback. As we travelledfrom the white sandy beaches of the east coast we passed through the heart of cotton growing country and it is picking time. At the cotton gins thereare huge bales of cotton as far as one can see. Later, the flat landscape gives us chances to see kangaroos and emus in the “out-bush”.
When we reach Lightning Ridge we know we are in mining country when we seethe heavy equipment and piles of dirt that have been worked in search ofopals. The town has more than it’s share of characters and reminds one of anAmerican western movie.
