In Warrumbungle National Park, we found a site at our campground that had a Kangaroo grazing on the grass and foliage within a few yards of our campsite. We sat outside with the very friendly Roo and were eating the leftovers from the great dinner we had the previous evening at the Lightning Ridge Bowl Club when I placed my plate on the table next to us to make an entry in my computer when I heard a loud SWOOSH. I quickly looked up to see a Kookaburra that snatched a piece of meat from my plate and was there flailing it on the ground to break it up in smaller pieces for him to eat. I watched in amusement as he gorged himself on my dinner. We then tried to finish dinner with the contented Roo that decided to lay down and take a break from his dinner. Again I put my plate on the table to use my computer when the opportunistic, little, thief swooped down again from his perch where he was patiently watching me and stole another piece of meat from my plate. The Roo observed it all and I thought I saw a bit of a smile on his face while he laid there in contentment.
We also met a local retired, knowledgeable and friendly Aussie who was parked next to us and had an opportunity to talk with him to learn about the Butcher Birds, Brown Snakes and the different stars seen in the southern sky. We had a very nice evening visiting with the Kangaroo, Cockatoos, Kookaburra (who gave me another learning experience by stealing my dinner) and the local Aussie couple.
